CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE

Brian watched something rip itself out of that dark mound on the sewer roof and fall towards the water below.

Whatever it was, it hit the water with a large splash. The dark water looked so still before. But now, there were ripples in it. He didn’t know what had fallen from the ceiling exactly. But he did have his suspicions. Strong suspicions. Based on what he’d seen before.

His mind flashed back to the apartments. To the mould-covered bodies, held to the ceiling by long, thick vines.

And to that street, in the fallen safe zone, with Georgia.

The way that weird, black gunk burst out of those screaming bodies.

Ripped its way out of them.

And right now, that’s all he could see.

That’s all that made sense.

And that meant getting out of here was so, so important right now.

He held Felix’s hand. Which was shaking again. Shaking even harder now.

He looked down the dark path, deeper into the sewers, where they’d come from.

It seemed even darker, somehow.

Even more imposing.

As if the darkness itself was watching.

Following them.

Closing in…

And then he noticed something else.

In that darkness, from the sewer roof above, more splashes.

More of those tearing sounds.

More things, breaking free of whatever was holding them up, and falling into the water below.

One, by one, by one.

Brian’s heart beat faster.

He knew what he needed to do.

But at the same time, he felt frozen.

He felt trapped.

He took another deep breath of that putrid, rancid air.

He couldn’t stay trapped for too long.

He needed to snap out of this.

Now.

He turned around. Ran towards the ladder. He had to get Felix onto it. Then he had to get Buster under his arm and Wesley over his shoulders, and then…

Splashing.

In the water.

Right behind.

Screaming.

Thrashing about.

Shrieking.

Just hearing those sounds, Brian knew right away it wasn’t just standard infected they were dealing with here.

It was the others.

Their second form.

Their true form.

And that made him even more determined to get the fuck away.

Now.

He grabbed the bottom of the ladder. Started to climb up it, just testing it was okay. Testing it was safe.

Right on cue, the ladder snapped.

It tumbled down.

Fell, right in front of him.

Brian stared at that ladder. Lying there on the ground. He couldn’t believe it. Couldn’t actually believe it. This wasn’t right. This couldn’t be fucking happening.

But… shit. It was.

So he had to figure something out.

He heard more screams. Echoing through the sewers.

More splashes.

Things.

Dark things, out of sight, splashing through the water.

Approaching the shore.

He held Felix’s hand tighter.

The dogs, both barking now, right beside him.

He couldn’t stand by this ladder for a moment longer.

There was only one thing he could do.

And that was run.

“Come on,” he shouted. “Now!”

He turned. And he ran.

Down that pathway.

Deeper into the sewers.

Further into the darkness.

He heard screams.

More screams.

And more splashes.

Right behind him.

And right next to him.

Closer.

Closer, and getting even closer…

He ran further. He ran faster. Down this slippery pathway. Felix’s hand in his. The dogs right behind him. Right at his heels.

And he didn’t know where this path led.

He didn’t know where the fuck it was going to go.
